Modelling the effect of speaker familiarity and noise on infant word recognition

چکیده
In the present paper we show that a general-purpose word learn ing model can simulate several important findings from recent experiments in language acquisition. Both the addition of back ground noise and varying the speaker have been found to in fluence infants’ performance during word recognition experi ments. We were able to replicate this behaviour in our artificial word learning agent. We use the results to discuss both ad vantages and limitations of computational models of language acquisition.

Familiarity Effect on Spoken Word Recognition in Japanese
Word familiarity effects on lexical decision times and recognition scores were investigated for two sets of 100 spoken Japanese words whose familiarity ratings ranged from middle (4.0) to high (7.0) taken from a recently-developed word familiarity database containing about 80,000 Japanese words. The results showed that the higher the word familiarity rating is, the shorter the reaction time is,...
متن کاملModelling the Noise-Robustness of Infants’ Word Representations: The Impact of Previous Experience
During language acquisition, infants frequently encounter ambient noise. We present a computational model to address whether specific acoustic processing abilities are necessary to detect known words in moderate noise--an ability attested experimentally in infants. The model implements a general purpose speech encoding and word detection procedure. Importantly, the model contains no dedicated p...
متن کاملEffects of ageing on speed and temporal resolution of speech stimuli in older adults
Background: According to previous studies, most of the speech recognition disorders in older adults are the results of deficits in audibility and auditory temporal resolution. In this paper, the effect of ageing on timecompressed speech and auditory temporal resolution by word recognition in continuous and interrupted noise was studied. Methods: A time-compressed speech test (TCST) w...
متن کاملEffect of signal to noise ratio on the speech perception ability of older adults
Background: Speech perception ability depends on auditory and extra-auditory elements. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is an extra-auditory element that has an effect on the ability to normally follow speech and maintain a conversation. Speech in noise perception difficulty is a common complaint of the elderly. In this study, the importance of SNR magnitude as an extra-auditory effect on speech...
متن کاملOnset of word form recognition in English, Welsh, and EnglishWelsh bilingual infants
Children raised in the home as English or Welsh monolinguals or English–Welsh bilinguals were tested on untrained word form recognition using both behavioral and neurophysiological procedures. Behavioral measures confirmed the onset of a familiarity effect at 11 months in English but failed to identify it in monolingual Welsh infants between 9 and 12 months. In the neurophysiological procedure ...
